About the artist

Olly Oakley 1877–1943

The stage name of Joseph Sharpe, born in Birmingham, and England's most-recorded banjoist of the period. His instrument was the zither-banjo, which he took up around the age of twelve after hearing the Bohee Brothers play, and he issued records under a scattering of other names besides — Fred Turner, Jack Sherwood, Frank Forrester. The banjo's bright, percussive attack suited the recording horn far better than most instruments, which is why banjo records survive from this era in such numbers. Rheumatoid arthritis in his hands ended his career in 1930.
