United States Marine Band founded 1798

“The President's Own”, founded in 1798 and the oldest continuously active professional musical ensemble in the United States. It was among the very first ensembles ever recorded commercially, in the early 1890s. John Philip Sousa was its director from 1880 to 1892, before leaving to form the band that carries his name — though he is not thought ever to have conducted the Marine Band for a recording.
