Transcript

I've seen lots of bunny lashes on my crippled wife But my heart is centered new on bunny kid McBride Although I'm not a fella that would throw a word away I'm surprised sometimes myself, I've got to say For roaming in the gloaming on the banks of Clyde Roaming in the gloaming with my lassie by my side For the sun is gone to rest, that's the time that we love best Oh, it's lovely roaming in the gloaming La,

la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la One night in the gloaming we were tripping side by side I kissed her twice and I asked her once if she would be my bride She was shy and so was I, we were both the same But I got braver and braver on the journey coming home For roaming in the gloaming on the banks of Clyde Roaming in the gloaming with my lassie by my side For the sun is gone to rest,

that's the time that we love best Oh, it's lovely roaming in the gloaming La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la Last night after strolling we got in at half past nine And sitting at the kitchen fire I asked her to be mine When she promised I got up and I danced the hill and fling I've just been to the jewellers and I've bought the wedding ring My dear,

well, I'll let some of you laddies here see the ring I'm telling you, it's a beauty, wait till you see it And when you do see it, I'll bet you there's no laddie here the next but with her mouth waters when she does see it Now there, as you see, isn't that a beauty, eh? Now I'm telling you, when I think of it, sitting at the fire last night with my left arm round about her neck and my right arm round about her waist,

just like that Now I'm telling you, here, do you know the first thing I done when I got home last night, eh? I drank two tumblers of cold water Oh, I was warm, of course it was just the excitement of the preposition that done it And then I got the wee poker and I pokered up the fire And then I got the wee kettle and I put the wee kettle on to boil to make myself a nice wee cup of tea because I didn't want to disturb the old folks And then I sat down on the end of the fender to wait on the kettle coming through the bile And I'd been sitting about a quarter of an hour when I fell fast asleep And do you know what wakened me,

eh? I'll bet you, Bob, you don't know Well, it was the kettle sitting on the fire, singing to the teapot on the hob Oh, roaming in the gloaming on the banks of Clyde Roaming in the gloaming with my laddie by my side When the sun has gone to rest, that's the time that we love best Oh, it's lovely roaming in the gloaming Oh, you're gonna beat it

Harry Lauder 1870–1950

A Scottish music-hall singer and comedian whose fees briefly made him the best-paid entertainer anywhere in the world. Lauder toured Britain, America and Australia in kilt and crooked walking stick, and most of the material was his own — “I Love a Lassie”, “A Wee Deoch an Doris”, “Roamin' in the Gloamin'”. He was knighted in 1919 for entertaining troops and raising funds during the First World War, in which his only son was killed.
